The Bitter Bag…

The New Year is upon us and I just want to know one thing, “What are you packing in your New Year’s bag?”

Throughout social media, I see people posting “New Year, New Me”; yet, they bring so much of last year’s negativity into the New Year.  Mind you, I do believe sometimes one must look at the old so as to see how to get to the new.  However, when allowing the old to linger, it poses a threat to the mantra “New Year, New Me”.  What about you can be new when you keep holding on to the old?

Bitter Bag Packing consists of the baggage such as toxic relationships (be it intimate or otherwise); lack of balance between planning and doing; and/or holding on to negativity (either towards self, others or both). There could be a myriad of things stored in your New Year’s bag that you do not necessarily desire to take into this New Year.  Unfortunately,we  sometimes have subconsciously compartmentalized and packed it away –instead of dumping the baggage all together.  (Disclaimer: I am no certified therapist, but I know a thing or two about being weighed down by unnecessary BAGGAGE!)  I suggest making a list of the Good vs. Not So Good things you have in your current 2015 bag.  Look at the list with strong intent to leave some things behind (preferably those things that are negative and/or out of your control), positively build on other things, and potentially add new and better things.

As we head into the New Year, I challenge

you to pack light and comfortably because you then can open yourself up to so much more.

“And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined.  No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.” Mark 2:22

Sincerely,

Your Restyled Mom…who is making room for God’s pouring into NEW wineskin.

12 Things You Probably Shouldn’t Be Doing If You’re Broke

New Year, New You…One Word (that will change your life)

Last year, my mom introduced me to the YouVersion app and some of the reading/devotional plans offered. The one reading plan that stood out the most was a 4 day reading plan entitled One Word That Will Change Your LifeIf ALL of me, which is composed of being a single mom, dateless in Dallas, living on a self-imposed budget, can have her entire essence of existence changed with one word, then honey this was what I needed!

The goal of this particular devotional is to have one word, for the entire year, that you live out.  This one word is to allow one to focus on God’s intent for his/her life through that one word.  As I worked through the 4 day devotional, I prayed, asking God what my word should be.  For the 2015 year, my word was Finish.

So often, I found myself feeling cluttered, anxious, overwhelmed and down right exhausted.  I felt as though I was getting nowhere in my life, agonizing over where I thought my life should be versus where it actually was.  After reading this devotional, I realized there were so many things I would start but leave unfinished; hence, I had no closure  (i.e. DIY projects, thorough closet cleaning, to do lists that never really got done).  I don’t know about you, but for me, when I have so many open action items, I get a little antsy.  I begin to feel as if everything is falling out of whack and needs to be placed back into some semblance of order -quickly

Some of these things may sound simple to you.  However, it can range from incomplete projects right down to complex relationships needing some type of resolve -even if that resolve is to end the relationship all together.  I’ve already begun praying about my one word for the 2016 year.  I’m thinking discipline, but the big guy (Jesus) and I are still in chats.

As we enter this New Year, I strongly recommend taking the time to commit to this year long journey.  I must admit, although I did not finish everything, I did finish most things and have had resolve in other areas of my life.  I feel less anxious and more connected to God and the destiny he has for me.  What do you think your One Word should or will be?  Share in the comments below or Tweet your One Word here.

Sincerely,

Your Restyled Mom…who is looking forward to the Journey of #OneWord

Tis the Season…to Not Go Broke! A Mind Blowing Budget (part 2)

iThe best budgets are Not the ones constructed and kept in your hbudget p2ead; but the best budgets are the ones written out.

Around this time last year, my church announced offering Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU) classes, and I knew this was God’s confirmation.  It was time to put action with the plan to begin my debt freedom journey.  FPU was by far one of the greatest investments into myself.  Yes.  There will be times when you should invest wisely into Y-O-U!

Somewhere between your next cyber purchase or in-store layaway deposit, in the back of your head, you’re thinking of the mounting bills.  Tell me, “Where’s the Comfort and Joy in that thought?” Do understand, it’s okay to buy gifts, but take the time to also think about their significance and how much is enough.  Do you really need to get one more toy, TV, or ___________________(insert any item here)?

Since I want you to #WIN as we move into 2016, I’ve provided you an idea of a budget.  Of course, you’ll want to doctor it up, but I want you to  Start winning NOW!  Let me know in the comments what you think.

Though this is a “sample” budget and the figures are not factual, I want to express to you a few things:

  1. February 2016 will mark my 1 year anniversary of NOT having a cable subscription.  I asked myself, “Self? Do you really need that monthly cable subscription?” Clearly, you see how “Self” answered.
  2. It takes time to get your budget down. You’ll find the need to adjust and then readjust some more. Some months you get it right; some months not so much. However, Don’t Get Discouraged! Keep going.
  3. Don’t deprive yourself, but Do work on becoming disciplined. For me, BLOW money is a combo of last minute ‘mommy I forgots’ (i.e. I need money for…), as well as those moments when I deserve something pretty (just don’t go overboard).
Payment Amount Category/Debt Remaining Balance
$1,400 (bi-weekly)
$120 Tithes (Always my first) $1280
100 Grocery (I write out a 2 week menu that includes leftovers) 1180
50 Gas (I try not to joy ride) 1130
400 Mortgage/Rent 730
100 Electric* (I’m like that dad on  the TV show “Everybody Hates Chris”.  I can feel the kilowatts going up when lights are left on in empty rooms! 630
50 Water* 580
65 Day/ After school care 515
150 Auto 365
50 Cell phone* 315
50 Internet* 265
50 Life insurance* (have additional life insurance outside your job) 215
8 Monthly subscription* (i.e. Hulu, Netflix) 207
50 Savings 1 157
60 Extracurricular activity* 97
50 Clothing* 47
40 Blow (for those wonderful last minute “mommy I need” moments”) 7

*Monthly payments not broken down into bi-weekly payments

Restyled Moms, Don’t let your 2015 debts become your 2016 regrets.  Give your plans to God and watch him shape them for your BEST.  Here’s to your Prosperous 2016

Sincerely,

Your Restyled Mom…who is living on a #budget and looking forward to a #debtfree future

Tis the Season…To Not Go Broke! A Mind Blowing Budget (part 1)

Budgets start in your head, but they shouldn’t stay there.restyledmom.com (2)_edited

As we cruise into Christmas (15 days from today’s date), have you stopped to check your bank account or that credit card balance?  How many times have you looked at the ending balance of your bank account and wondered “where did all of the money go?”, or thought “there just isn’t enough to take care of the things needed, let alone try to get the things wanted’?

I’ve been there, on both ends of the spectrum.  I’ve looked at my bills and my bank account, and thought to myself “my account must have been hacked” –knowing all the while I was the hacker.   I have sat many nights allowing my story to be one of a broke and broken single mom.  I fed into my spirit that only one income would never get me to where I wanted to be; and I would forever have to ‘rob Peter to pay Paul’.  I was praying, but I was not truly giving it to God; I was just talking to Him –going through the motions, but not exercising my faith.

This holiday season, I want the first part of your ‘Budget Build’ to start with feeding your soul positive input.  Sometimes, the preparation for the journey simply begins with mentally preparing for this budgeting lifestyle or possibly repairing how you once looked at things.  For myself, I now speak and plan in faith.  I have a vision for my future and I pray it is aligned with the vision God has for me.

In Part 2, I’ll share with you a sample budget with a break down of a few categories.  Hint, cable is no longer included.

Sincerely,

Your Restyled Mom…who is no longer living to pay debts but now living with plans to prosper.

Got Goals?

It’s about 49 days shy of being 2016.  What are your Top 3 Goals for the New Year?

There’s an Instagram post I usually see, around mid-January, which reads something like “if you’re just now planning your goals for the New Year, then you’re already late!”  I’m paraphrasing, but this statement is so discouraging!  However, this post is to ERADICATE the aforementioned ever applying to you; and in turn, ENCOURAGE you to #ShineIn2016!

I usually get started on my New Year’s goals in the New Year, of course.  Though this time, my approach to the new year will be different.  Last year, I completed my 2015 goals worksheet on January 1, 2015.  While I will complete my goals worksheet again for 2016, I have started early –comparing my 2015 accomplishments (some not so accomplished) to what I am working towards in the coming year.  Failure is not an option and there is no room for doubt. (Tweet This)

Just as it takes time to break a habit, it also takes time to form one.  As of today, November 13, 2015, I have decided to go into 2016 already Rockin’ It!  With that said #RestyledMom, let’s not get so far into 2016 waiting for our budgets, our diets, our attitudes, our _____________ (fill in the blank) to fall in line before deciding to kick your goals into high gear.  You’ll glance away for what feels like a second, and before you know it, it will be 2017.  The only thing you’ll be kicking is yourself –wondering where did the time go?!

Jump start your goals now!  I want you to Step Out on Faith and Tweet @RestyledMom, to let me know how you are going to #ShineIn2016.  Don’t just bring in 2016.  Come in already Shining!

Your Restyled Mom…who wants you to #ShineIn2016
